Sustainability

Water Management

Bancoii is specially concerned and interested in water management investments. Current trends pointing to a continuing intensification of water use include:

• Rising demand: over the last 100 years, global population tripled, but water use expanded six-fold 1.
• Unmet needs: in spite of improvements, c.1.1 billion people lacked access to safe drinking water in 2002 and 2.6 billion had inadequate sanitation.
• Depleting supplies: Between 5-25% of global fresh water use exceeds long-term accessible supplies.

Unprecedented levels of investment are required in the coming decades to place water management on a safe and sustainable basis. Recognising the importance of sustainable water management, world leaders have made water a central feature of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), agreed at the United Nations(UN) in 2000 (for more information, , see: http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals).In the industrialised world, the drivers are increased environmental regulation and the need to upgrade ageing infrastructure, while in emerging markets the focus is still on introducing comprehensive water infrastructure to meet rising demand. Technological innovation is driving growth in all markets.

• The water industry is estimated to be a USD 300-400 billion a year global market, growing at an average 7% per annum to 2010 5.
• The private sector share of the global water distribution and waste water markets are each expected to rise from 9% in 2004 to 17% in 2015.
• The Asia-Pacific market is the fastest growing, and is projected to rise to USD 270 billion by 2025. The World Bank estimates that the Chinese environmental protection market will grow by 17.5% annually – with 40% focused on water 7.
• The UN estimates that an additional investment of USD 11.3 billion per year over and above current spending on water management could result in a total economic benefit of USD 84 billion annually - the economic benefits range from USD 3 to 34 per USD 1 invested, depending on the region 8.

Careful stewardship of the world’s limited fresh water resources is essential for the twin task of eliminating global poverty and guaranteeing a healthy environment. This is driving substantial growth in investments in water supply and treatment.

Bancoii focuses on companies whose goods and services facilitate the good management and conservation of water. We are seeking companies in the following sub-industry:

• Water supply - providing purification, distribution, waste water treatment and water recycling services.
• Water equipment & technologies - providing solutions enabling more efficient and better use of water.

Examples of companies within this sub industry include Geberit [Switzerland] a manufacturer of sanitary technology that reduces water consumption, Pentair [USA] which makes products for water and waste treatment, and Severn Trent [UK] which provides water and waste water treatment, waste management and laboratory services.
